30/10/10 Hegura-jima, Japan

30/10/10: The effects of Typhoon No. 14 passing just east of Honshu were readily apparent with a NE6 wind and cloudy conditions. However, parts of the island proved more sheltered than expected during the early morning walk and a Siberian Accentor seen along the Central Track kept our spirits high. The morning saw an arrival of 330 Dusky Thrushes with a few Eye-browed Thrushes also seen arriving as well as Finches and White-Eyes again seen on the move and 30 Skylarks reached their daily maximum. Offshore Streaked Shearwaters totalled over 1,000 in a short period of time with 3 Kittiwakes also seen. Tsukasa held the usual suspects and shortly before dusk we found yet another Red-breasted Flycatcher at the nearby Tree Shrine – where are all the Taiga Flycatchers!

In comparison to Common Gull L. canus note the pale iris, weakly-marked long bill and its overall very elongated appearance.
