From soon after dawn I concentrated on the bamboo stands along the Tapir Trail hoping to find an East Andean Long-tailed Antbird that proved quite straightforward. We then chose to have another look at the White-bellied Antpitta, that took its time to appear, but eventually showed well. We then decided to try the Guacamayos Ridge trail again, but despite better weather, the birding there actually proved quieter. We made the drive to Wild Sumaco Lodge - initially in heavy rain. On arrival we were asked if we would like to walk from the Lodge to the Antpitta feeding station at 3pm. In the meantime we watched the Hummingbird feeders that added a Many-spotted Hummingbird and were thrilled to find 2 male Wire-crested Thorntails nearby. At 3pm we joined a nice lad working at the Lodge who was armed with a small pot of earthworms. As we entered the Coopmans Trail we flushed a male Maroon-chested Ground-Dove off the ground from beneath some seeding bamboo that flew right past us much to our delight and also that of the lad from the lodge. We enjoyed an excellent session at the feeding station that produced Plain-backed and Ochre-breasted Antpittas and a Spotted Nightingale-Thrush. We remained after the lad left and all three species were seen several times. On our walk back we stumbled across a pair of Spot-backed Antbirds and, right at dusk, a pair of Sickle-winged Guans emerged to feed in a Cecropia tree that rounded off a very pleasing start to the birding at Wild Sumaco with several of our main target species seen.
